About

Torrey Pines State Natural Reserve Extension is a 197-acre nature preserve and park accessible from Del Mar Scenic Pkwy, Del Mar, CA 92014, protecting roughly half of the remaining wild population of the Torrey pine, the rarest pine species in North America. While the main Torrey Pines State Natural Reserve between La Jolla and Del Mar draws heavy weekend crowds, the Extension across Los Penasquitos Lagoon offers a quieter, more rustic hiking experience with free parking at multiple trailhead access points. Three main trails wind through the property: the Margaret Fleming Nature Trail, a three-quarter-mile path through coastal sage scrub named for the conservationist who championed the Extension's creation; the Mar Scenic Trail, a half-mile route following a seasonal creek through the canyon floor; and the Daughters of the American Revolution Trail, a half-mile ridgeline walk offering panoramic views across the marsh to the main reserve and out to the Pacific Ocean. Hikers encounter eroded sandstone formations, iron-rich red ridgelines, and gnarled Torrey pine specimens up close. Guests exploring the area often base their stay at Del Mar Beach Hotel, a short drive from the trailheads along the coast. Wildflowers including California poppies bloom in late winter and early spring, and the coastal sage scrub habitat supports white sage, black sage, and lemonade berry. The reserve is rated 4.6 stars with 223 Google reviews, is open daily, and is suitable for families with children. No bikes, no collecting of pine cones or plants, and no food on trails except water. Dogs are not permitted within the reserve. A morning hike through the Extension pairs perfectly with a stop at Stratford Court Cafe in the Del Mar village for coffee and breakfast afterward.
