About

The San Diego Sports Association is a nonprofit organization headquartered at 3840 Via De La Valle STE 300 in Del Mar, CA 92014, dedicated to celebrating local athletic achievement and supporting youth development through sports across San Diego County. The organization traces its roots to the Breitbard Athletic Foundation, established in 1946 by legendary San Diego sports figure Bob Breitbard, and continues his mission of creating meaningful opportunities through athletics and philanthropy. The Breitbard Hall of Fame, now housed at Petco Park in the Western Metal Supply Co. Building, has inducted more than 155 members across 25 sports since 1953, including icons like Tony Gwynn, Tony Hawk, Junior Seau, Ted Williams, Bill Walton, and Trevor Hoffman, and is viewed by approximately 750,000 visitors annually. Each year the SDSA hosts its marquee event, the Salute to the Champions Gala, which kicked off 2026 with its 78th edition and welcomed Barry Zito and Stephen Strasburg into the Hall of Fame. The Brad Fowler Memorial Scholarship awards $7,500 to at least seven high school seniors annually who have demonstrated an ability to overcome personal obstacles, with a second $7,500 award available after maintaining good academic standing in their first year of college. The association also facilitates the San Diego Padres' Reviving Baseball in Inner Cities program, providing nearly 1,000 youth ages 5 to 17 in underserved neighborhoods with a free eight-game baseball and softball season each summer, complete with jerseys, equipment, and tickets to a Padres game. Monthly Stars of the Month awards recognize professional, amateur, and prep athletes, with honorees featured in the San Diego Union-Tribune and at Del Mar Fairgrounds events throughout the year. The SDSA office is open Monday through Friday from 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. on Via De La Valle, near the Del Mar Racing grounds and the broader sports and entertainment corridor of Del Mar. The organization holds a 4.3-star Google rating and maintains active partnerships with every local professional sports franchise, university, and high school in the county.
