Pioneering psychiatrist Robert J. Neborsky, MD has maintained his private practice at 317 14th St in Del Mar, CA 92014 since 1981, making him one of the longest-tenured mental health practitioners in the village. Dr. Neborsky holds dual academic appointments as a Clinical Professor of Psychiatry at UCSD School of Medicine and an Honorary Clinical Professor at UCLA School of Medicine, and he is a Distinguished Life Fellow of the American Psychiatric Association. He earned his medical degree from the University of Maryland School of Medicine, where he received the Jacob Finesinger Award in Psychiatry, and completed his residency at Emory University School of Medicine, earning the Hope Skobba Memorial Award. After serving as Director of In-Patient Psychiatry at Balboa Naval Hospital for the U.S. Navy, he joined the UCSD School of Medicine full-time faculty as an Assistant Professor overseeing emergency psychiatric services and the medical student clerkship. He shares the 14th Street building with Integrative Pediatrics of Del Mar, where Dr. Lisa Loegering brings a similarly integrative philosophy to pediatric care. Dr. Neborsky is internationally recognized as a pioneer of Attachment-Based Intensive Short-Term Dynamic Psychotherapy (IS-TDP). In 1981, while training with Dr. Habib Davanloo, he co-founded the San Diego Institute for Short-Term Dynamic Psychotherapy. He co-authored Short-Term Therapy for Long-Term Change (Norton, 2001), contributed to Healing Trauma: Attachment, Mind, Body, and Brain (Norton, 2003), and authored Roadmap to the Unconscious: Mastering Intensive Short-Term Dynamic Psychotherapy. In 2003, the UCLA clinical faculty association named him Distinguished Psychiatric Lecturer of the Year. He also founded and served as president of the Southern California Society for IS-TDP, and he serves as Medical Director of Lifespan Learning Institute, a nonprofit specializing in continuing education for mental health professionals. His current research explores the interface between attachment theory, neuroscience, and psychotherapy, with particular focus on treatment-resistant depression and traumatic brain injury recovery.
