About

Surfight Jiu Jitsu trains out of 2126 Jimmy Durante Blvd in Del Mar, CA 92014, earning a 4.9-star Google rating as one of the most distinctive Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu academies in San Diego. The gym was co-founded by Joel Tudor, a professional longboard surfing icon and BJJ black belt under Rodrigo Medeiros of the Carlson Gracie lineage, alongside Magid Hage IV, a Gracie Barra-trained black belt who earned the rank at just 19 years old and is widely known in competition circles for his devastating baseball bat choke. Together they bring more than 30 years of combined martial arts experience and a culture that merges elite grappling with an ocean-inspired lifestyle. Classes cover adult gi and no-gi sessions, kids programs focused on confidence and discipline, drop-in sessions for visiting practitioners at $100 for privates, and an open-door policy welcoming any school affiliation. The uniform policy is the most relaxed in the area, allowing any gi brand and boardshorts for no-gi training. There are no long-term contracts or cancellation fees. Doors open Monday through Saturday from 7:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m. Magid has competed at ADCC Trials and IBJJF Worlds, and Joel brings a training intensity that belies his surfing fame, training twice daily most weeks. The academy sits directly next door to Del Mar Jiu-Jitsu Club on Jimmy Durante Boulevard, giving this one block the highest concentration of jiu-jitsu talent in North County. After rolling, many Surfight members grab a recovery meal at Broken Yolk Cafe, a short drive toward the coast for hearty post-workout plates.
