Veterans Services in Coronado — VFW Post 2422 & Military Support on Coronado Island

Is there a VFW post in Coronado?

VFW Post 2422 — named for General Henry D. Styer — has operated on Coronado since 1932, when more than 100 island residents signed a petition to charter their own Veterans of Foreign Wars chapter. The post sits at 557 Orange Avenue near the corner of Sixth Street, in a converted WAVES barracks that was moved to the current site in the early 1960s from its original location along San Diego Bay.

Post 2422 has over 600 members and is open to the public for lunch on Fridays and brunch on Sundays, when Chef Michael serves meals in the canteen. The VFW Auxiliary — with over 160 members — drives the post's fundraising through the Concert in the Park Steak Dinner series each summer and an annual rummage sale, distributing donations to Veterans Village of San Diego, Armed Services YMCA, the VA Medical Center, and Wreaths Across America.

What veteran support services are available on Coronado Island?

Beyond the VFW, Coronado's veteran support network extends through the Navy-Marine Corps Relief Society on base (emergency financial aid and education scholarships), the Navy SEAL Foundation headquartered on the island (family support and transition assistance for Special Warfare operators), and the City of Coronado's Avenue of Heroes program that displays commemorative banners honoring local service members along Third and Fourth Streets.

Active-duty volunteers log community service hours at VFW Post 2422 events, which the post documents for military evaluation submissions. Students from Navy Junior ROTC and Miramar Young Marines also volunteer at VFW functions. For veteran services beyond what Coronado offers locally, the VA San Diego Healthcare System and Veterans Village of San Diego operate across the bridge in downtown San Diego, and Point Loma's civic organizations include additional veteran-serving groups.
