Thomas Avallone, a board-certified ophthalmologist in Coronado, founded Island Eye Specialists at 1317 Ynez Place, Suite A, bringing fellowship-trained glaucoma, cataract, and refractive surgery expertise to Coronado Island. Avallone completed his MD at Louisiana State University Health Sciences Center in Shreveport, his ophthalmology residency at Naval Medical Center San Diego, and a glaucoma fellowship at the Jules Stein Eye Institute at UCLA — a training pipeline that included directing the Warfighter Refractive Surgery Center at Naval Hospital Camp Pendleton before establishing the Coronado practice within the same wellness ecosystem that includes Peak Health Group for preventive-health coordination. Diplomate of the American Board of Ophthalmology, Fellow of the American Academy of Ophthalmology, and member of the American Glaucoma Society, Dr. Avallone also holds an Assistant Professor appointment at the F. Edward Hebert School of Medicine at the Uniformed Services University of Health Sciences. The clinical team at the Ynez Place office now includes Dr. Mondzelewski — all Scripps-affiliated ophthalmologists — broadening the island's surgical capacity for the aging population also served by residential providers such as Villa Coronado Skilled Nursing Facility. Procedural capabilities span femtosecond-laser-assisted cataract extraction with premium toric and multifocal IOL implantation, minimally invasive glaucoma surgery including iStent and Kahook Dual Blade goniotomy, selective laser trabeculoplasty, and traditional trabeculectomy with mitomycin-C for advanced open-angle glaucoma.
