About

Sacred Heart Church at 655 C Avenue is Coronado Island's oldest Catholic parish, established in 1891 when a committee organized by a Hotel Del Coronado housekeeper raised the funds to build the island's first Catholic worship space at Seventh and B Street in the 92118 village. The parish's K–8 school, Sacred Heart Parish School, has operated across the street since 1947 when Benedictine sisters from Atchison, Kansas, staffed the first classrooms, establishing a Catholic education tradition that has served Coronado families for more than seven decades. The current church was dedicated in 1920 and designed by Irving J. Gill, the pioneering modernist architect whose stripped-classical California style earned Coronado Historical Society historic-site designation — placing the building in the same preservation category as Hotel Del Coronado on Orange Avenue and the Spreckels estate properties on the island. Bishop Cantwell of the Diocese of Monterey and Los Angeles called the completed structure one of the most architecturally accomplished ecclesiastical buildings in California at its dedication. The parish's civic engagement extends through community organizations such as the Coronado Community Foundation, connecting the congregation's charitable mission to the broader network of island nonprofits. C Avenue runs parallel to Orange Avenue two blocks east, and the church sits within the flat village grid that makes Coronado Beach, the Coronado Ferry Landing, and the Coronado Bridge approach accessible on foot from every block on the island. Weekly Mass follows the Roman Catholic liturgical calendar, with sacramental preparation for baptism, First Communion, Confirmation, and marriage serving both military families rotating through Naval Air Station North Island and longtime Coronado residents.
