About

Greetings from Little Saigon Mural in College Area marks San Diego's officially designated Little Saigon cultural district with a 12-by-20-foot postcard-style painting on the side of Sin Lee Market at 4665 El Cajon Boulevard in the 92115 ZIP. New York-based muralist Victor Ving and photographer Lisa Beggs painted the piece in January 2018 as part of their nationwide Greetings Tour project, which has produced more than 60 postcard-style murals across 25 states. The bright yellow background references the historical South Vietnamese flag's color palette, and each oversized letter contains hand-painted imagery drawn from the Vietnamese and broader Asian community that has operated approximately 70 percent of the businesses in this section of El Cajon Boulevard since refugees settled the corridor after the fall of Saigon in 1975. El Cajon Boulevard through this stretch functions as the densest international dining corridor east of the I-15, and Phở Ca Dao Restaurant anchors the San Diego pho scene with rice-noodle beef soup and broken-rice plates two blocks east of the mural. The Boulevard Business Improvement Association coordinated the wall access through Sin Lee Market's owner and provided logistical support, two years after commissioning the same artist duo for the Greetings from North Park mural on the same boulevard. The mural is accessible on foot from the sidewalk and has become a photo-op landmark for both tourists and residents, generating social-media traffic that reinforces the Little Saigon district's identity as a cultural destination rather than a pass-through corridor. Across the broader College Area cultural landscape, the San Diego Police Museum documents the history of regional law enforcement through artifact and photography exhibits on the opposite end of the neighborhood near SDSU. The mural faces south toward oncoming westbound traffic on El Cajon Boulevard, positioned so the full postcard composition is visible from a vehicle at the 47th Street intersection — a deliberate siting decision by the artists to maximize drive-by impact on a corridor that carries 20,000-plus average vehicles per day.
