About

Chollas Lake Park in College Area occupies 16 acres around a reservoir originally built in 1901 as one of San Diego's earliest municipal water supplies. The lake is the only youth-exclusive fishing facility in San Diego County, restricting access to anglers ages 15 and under who fish for free using hook-and-line from two piers and the shoreline. The California Department of Fish & Wildlife stocks the water with rainbow trout during winter months, supplementing a resident population of largemouth bass, bluegill, catfish, and carp. A 0.8-mile dirt loop circles the lake at grade, connecting to a second network of nature trails that climb into North Chollas Canyon and provide elevation-change views reaching downtown San Diego, Balboa Park, and the Coronado Bridge. Dogs are permitted on leash throughout the park, and College Animal Hospital on College Avenue handles the veterinary needs that come with active trail dogs in the 92115 corridor. Eighteen exercise stations line the walking path with pull-up bars, push-up platforms, and a balance beam, creating a circuit-training loop alongside the lake. Picnic shelters with charcoal barbecue grills, a children's playground with swings and slides, a small basketball court, and a multi-purpose ball field in the canyon occupy the upland sections of the park off College Grove Drive near the College Grove Shopping Center. Ranger-led programming includes a weekend fishing clinic, an intro-to-archery session for ages eight and up, a Birding 101 walk, and a Reading with the Ranger story hour for children five to ten. The park sits south of SDSU, accessible from CA-94 at the College Grove Drive exit, and serves the surrounding residential blocks where families stock up on fishing tackle and outdoor gear at Big 5 Sporting Goods on University Avenue before heading to the piers. Catch limits per session allow unlimited carp, two bass under 14 inches, and one trout of any size per angler.
