Since joining Kaiser Permanente's San Diego allergy department in 1977, Dr. Michael Schatz has built one of the most published clinical allergy practices in the region from his base at 4647 Zion Ave in Allied Gardens. He served as department chief from 2000 to 2011 and holds a concurrent appointment as Clinical Professor in the Department of Medicine at the UC San Diego School of Medicine. Primary care physicians across the area, including those at Inspire Wellness in Grantville, refer patients requiring subspecialty allergy workups to the Zion campus department. Dr. Schatz holds a medical degree and a Master of Science from Northwestern University's McGaw Medical Center, and his clinical focus spans asthma, drug allergy evaluation, allergic rhinitis, primary immunodeficiency disorders, and anaphylaxis management. His research contributions include serving as Editor-in-Chief of The Journal of Allergy and Clinical Immunology: In Practice since the journal's founding in 2013, and he received the American Academy of Allergy, Asthma & Immunology's Distinguished Clinician Award in 2015. The allergy department he built has maintained an active clinical research program for more than four decades, contributing data on asthma control metrics, penicillin skin testing outcomes, and the relationship between obesity and asthma severity. Acute allergic emergencies and severe asthma exacerbations that escalate beyond outpatient management transfer directly to the Kaiser Permanente Zion Emergency Room on the same campus in the 92120 ZIP. Before entering civilian practice, Dr. Schatz completed military service and received a Naval Commendation Medal in 1975.
