Many Shades of Pink is a San Diego breast cancer support and education nonprofit based in College Area at 6161 El Cajon Boulevard, Suite B-#145, serving women of color across the county. Founder Wendy Shurelds established the 501(c)(3) in 2018 after her own 2013 breast cancer diagnosis and subsequent advocacy work as a Susan G. Komen San Diego Circle of Promise Community Resource Advocate. MSOP's core programming deploys mobile mammography coaches directly to neighborhoods where transportation barriers and clinic access gaps prevent early detection, with more than 500 participants screened through clinical breast exams and preventive health resources to date. The El Cajon Boulevard corridor near SDSU anchors MSOP's outreach, connecting the organization to the dense, diverse communities that line the international dining strip east of campus in the 92115 ZIP. Health education initiatives draw on Shurelds's partnership with Stanford Institute and UC San Diego on a peer-reviewed research study—published in The Catalyst in August 2022—examining what compassion means to San Diego's Black community, a study that informs how SDSU Student Health Services and other campus-adjacent providers approach culturally responsive care. MSOP co-founded a monthly Community Health and Resource Fair at the Jackie Robinson YMCA in February 2017, assembling healthcare workers and grassroots organizations into a single free wrap-around service event addressing disparities in underserved communities. Shurelds received the President's Lifetime Achievement Award in February 2024 for sustained community service and the Mental Health America San Diego Joy McAllister Award in October 2023 for advocacy on behalf of women navigating breast cancer alongside mental health challenges. The Many Shades of Pink and Black Health Podcast, co-hosted by Shurelds and retired family physician Dr. Suzanne Affalo, runs 36 episodes covering health and social impacts specific to San Diego's communities of color, extending the organization's educational reach beyond in-person programming. A virtual breast cancer support group meets on the third Tuesday of each month, providing a survivor sisterhood for the newly diagnosed and long-term thrivers whose mental health needs connect to services offered by providers such as Alter Behavioral Health on El Cajon Boulevard. The annual fashion show fundraiser honors breast cancer survivors while generating operating funds for MSOP's mobile screening and community health programming across east San Diego.
