About

CIF San Diego Section is the governing body for high school athletics across San Diego and Imperial Counties, headquartered in College Area at 3470 College Avenue in the 92115 ZIP. The section formed in 1960 when San Diego County split from the CIF Southern Section, and it now administers interscholastic competition for more than 100 member schools—including Patrick Henry High School in Allied Gardens—under the California Interscholastic Federation, which has overseen prep sports statewide since 1914. The College Avenue office sits a half-mile south of the SDSU campus, positioned on the same north-south corridor that connects the university to the Rolando residential pocket. CIF San Diego Section organizes championship tournaments across over 30 sports, spanning fall programs in football, cross country, and girls volleyball through winter basketball, soccer, and wrestling seasons to spring baseball, track and field, swimming, and lacrosse. In 2013, the section introduced strength-based playoff divisions, creating an Open division that seeds the top eight teams in major sports regardless of school enrollment size. The section also sanctions unified sports and para-athletics in track and field and swimming, expanding competitive access for student-athletes with disabilities. Imperial County joined the San Diego Section in 2000, extending the administrative footprint south to the border. CIF San Diego Section broadcasts championships through the NFHS Network, sells event tickets via GoFan, and awards Mission Fed-sponsored Student Athlete of the Year honors each season. The section's youth-development pipeline feeds from age-group programs run by San Diego Pop Warner in Grantville, which organizes football and cheer for athletes not yet at the high school level. Championship finals have historically been held at Snapdragon Stadium, though recent seasons have rotated game sites to Southwestern College and Escondido High School.
