Wesley House Student Residence operates the only below-market supportive housing complex dedicated to low-income college students in San Diego at 5710 Hardy Avenue, College Area, 92115, steps from the SDSU campus. Founded in 2005, the 501(c)(3) nonprofit houses up to 34 post-secondary students in an 11-unit apartment building, with rents set according to U.S. Department of Housing & Urban Development income-limit guidelines. Residents include former foster youth, formerly incarcerated individuals, and first-generation college students, and clothing and household goods come through community donation networks that include organizations such as Sharia's Closet in College Area. In 2024, 69 percent of students served identified as BIPOC, and the on-site food pantry—maintained in partnership with Feeding San Diego and the San Diego Food Bank—distributed more than 201,000 pounds of food, the equivalent of 167,500 meals, to students and community members. The pantry is the only full-service food pantry in College Area, stocking fresh produce, shelf-stable staples, and non-food essentials including feminine hygiene products and school supplies, and it uses retail rescue to divert edible food from landfills. Wrap-around support services cover mentorship programming, social-worker check-ins, CalFresh and Medi-Cal enrollment assistance, financial-aid navigation, and academic advising. Hardy Avenue places the residence between SDSU's Calpulli Center and CERCA student housing, on the same block where the university's Associated Students directs students to food-security resources. LGBTQ+-affirming and Spanish-language services extend the organization's reach across College Area's diverse student population. Students maintaining fitness routines alongside academic schedules access nearby facilities such as Planet Fitness on University Avenue for membership-based training between classes. The 2018 CSU Basic Needs Study identified approximately 3,000 unsheltered students at SDSU alone, a statistic that underscores the demand Wesley House addresses through its housing and pantry programs.
