About

The San Diego Community Kollel fosters Jewish learning and community engagement from its College Area center at 6270 El Cajon Blvd, 92115, operating as a 501(c)(3) under EIN 88-4357343 with a focus on education, social programs, and interfaith connection. Founded by Rabbi Adam Simon, who holds smicha from Rabbi Zalman Nechemia Goldberg of Jerusalem and post-graduate certificates from Yeshiva University in Educational Technology and Experiential Jewish Education, the Kollel runs a nightly learning program that met nearly 200 times during 2024 and engaged more than 150 participants. The center also operates a resident scholar program that brought more than 10 scholars from outside San Diego to lead study sessions and community engagement events during that same year, positioning it alongside faith communities such as Create Church as part of College Area's broader interfaith landscape along El Cajon Boulevard. Simon and Chava Simon adapted the Moving Traditions Rosh Chodesh curriculum for the Orthodox community, a program initially fiscally sponsored by Beth Jacob Congregation on College Avenue before the Kollel incorporated as an independent organization. The Kollel secured and renovated its own space to house learning programs, JPro San Diego coworking sessions for Jewish nonprofit workers, and community events ranging from Hanukkah gatherings to parent-child learning nights. El Cajon Boulevard places the center within blocks of SDSU and the concentration of cultural and religious institutions that line the corridor between College Area and Rolando. Community organizations such as UrbanLife operate in the same neighborhood framework that supports grassroots programming and volunteer engagement. The Jewish Community Foundation of San Diego has supported the Kollel's Rosh Chodesh programming through its Jewish Women's Foundation grantmaking arm, adding institutional backing to the organization's grassroots model.
