College Ave Church in College Area, San Diego, is a Converge Worldwide congregation that traces its founding to July 14, 1892, when Swedish immigrants organized Bethel Swedish Baptist Church at 19th and Market streets downtown. The church relocated to 4747 College Ave in the 92115 ZIP after outgrowing successive facilities, and today the College Avenue campus sits half a mile south of SDSU on the corridor between El Cajon Boulevard and Montezuma Road. Rev. Augustus Bernhard Orgren, a graduate of Stockholm's Royal Academy of Music and Chicago's Bethel Seminary, led the original 1892 congregation. Music has been central to the ministry since its founding: the sanctuary has hosted performances by the San Diego Youth Symphony, SDSU Symphony Orchestra, and recitals from the broader music education community that includes The Music Lessons Studio in San Carlos. Services were conducted exclusively in Swedish until the 1920s, and the switch to English in 1934 accelerated the church's growth into a multi-campus operation.
