Agape House Lutheran-Episcopal Campus Ministry in College Area, San Diego, has operated as a joint Lutheran and Episcopalian student ministry at SDSU since 1952, when a graduate student first volunteered to run campus outreach from St. Dunstan's Episcopal Church, which then stood where the SDSU Transit Center sits now. The Lutheran Campus Council of San Diego purchased the current property at 5863 Hardy Avenue on May 9, 1963, establishing a permanent base adjacent to the southwest edge of the SDSU campus in the 92115 ZIP. The ministry is incorporated as a California 501(c)(3) nonprofit and is recognized by the university as an official student organization and Cooperative Campus Religious Center. During academic semesters, the Hardy Avenue house functions as a drop-in space where students study, use computers, eat lunch, and attend small-group worship gatherings without a denominational requirement for participation. Six raised-bed vegetable and fruit gardens installed in 2013 supply produce for community meals and illustrate the ministry's emphasis on food access, a commitment that expanded during the COVID-19 pandemic when Agape House ran food distribution, outdoor activities, and online cooking classes for students and neighbors. The Episcopal Diocese of San Diego continues to co-sponsor the ministry alongside ELCA Lutheran congregations. Planning is underway to replace the existing house with an expanded campus ministry center that would include housing for up to 50 student residents, staff space, and gathering areas for 150, positioned a short walk from SDSU Centennial Plaza and the Conrad Prebys Aztec Student Union. The current facility seats roughly 40 for worship and hosts retreats, sailing excursions, and cross-cultural immersion trips organized by the on-staff Lutheran pastor.
