About

Mission Trails Bar sits inside Mission Trails Golf Course in San Carlos at 7380 Golfcrest Pl, San Diego, 92119, serving the clubhouse crowd from an L-shaped counter that faces three flat-screen TVs. The golf course opened in 1964, designed by William F. Bell as an 18-hole, par-71 layout stretching 5,940 yards across the valley floor at the base of Cowles Mountain. A covered patio off the bar overlooks the eighteenth green, giving post-round groups a direct sightline to the finishing hole while they settle their bets. Lake Murray Boulevard runs parallel to the course's eastern boundary, and the post-round dining circuit through San Carlos connects the clubhouse to Sei Sushi and a dozen other restaurants within a two-minute drive. The front nine plays through a narrow valley with drainage channels cutting across several fairways, and the back nine winds along the shores of Lake Murray, where the water hazard on the fourteenth forces a carry over the lake's edge. Phil Mickelson grew up in the San Carlos and Del Cerro neighborhoods and started working at this course as a teenager, picking up trash and collecting range balls before graduating to the practice tee. The driving range runs lighted bays for evening practice, and the pro shop arranges PGA instruction for all skill levels. Bermuda grass greens and fairways hold up through San Diego's dry summers, and the course carries a 68.8 rating with a 118 slope from the back tees. Weekend brunch traffic from The Trails Eatery next door spills into the bar for Bloody Marys before tee times. The barbecue outlet at the tenth tee handles grab-and-go concessions for players making the turn, while the main bar pours draft beer, well cocktails, and house wine from a six-tap system behind the counter.
