CDR Jack E. Carleton VFW Post 2111 in Chula Vista was chartered on December 26, 1930, with 25 members, making it one of the oldest Veterans of Foreign Wars posts in San Diego County and currently the second-largest in California with more than 1,300 active members. The post co-sponsors the annual Veterans Day ceremony at Chula Vista Memorial Park Bowl alongside American Legion Post 434 and Fleet Reserve Association Branch 61, reinforcing a tri-organization service network rooted in the city's downtown corridor. Post 2111 absorbed two additional posts through mergers — VFW Post 8769 in 1965, Post 1986 in 2002, and Post 83 in 2005 — retaining the Carleton charter each time and purchasing the building at Third and I Streets in 1965, where the canteen and hall remain today at 299 I Street. Youth-oriented programs include the Voice of Democracy and Patriot's Pen patriotic essay competitions for high school and middle school students, while the post's annual Teacher, EMT, Police Officer, and Firefighter of the Year awards recognize South Bay first responders — fundraising for which is supported by community partners including Veterans Thrift Store. The post's Stand Down Program deploys volunteer kitchen crews to prepare meals for homeless veterans, and its Wounded Warrior Meals initiative delivers prepared food to service members recovering at Balboa Naval Medical Center in San Diego.
