Chula Vista Fire Department Station 1 at 447 F Street has served as a Battalion Headquarters since 1948, when the department moved into the location after purchasing its first postwar engine. The station anchors the western battalion command covering downtown Chula Vista's Third Avenue Village and Broadway corridor, with Engine 51 providing first-due response to a territory that includes the Medical Center Drive complex surrounding Scripps Mercy Hospital Chula Vista. CVFD was established on May 2, 1921, when 17 volunteers — members of a local baseball club — signed incorporation papers in the city's original firehouse, making it one of the oldest continuously operating municipal fire departments in San Diego County. The department now staffs 10 fire stations across 52.09 square miles with 163 sworn firefighters, responding to more than 28,000 calls for service annually — 85 percent medical, 10 percent fire suppression, and 5 percent hazardous-materials or technical rescue — coordinating with municipal leadership at City of Chula Vista - City Hall two blocks away. Voters approved Measure A in June 2018 to fund public-safety staffing and Measure P to finance station upgrades, new apparatus, and equipment modernization across the system.
