Hui O Hawaii of San Diego in Chula Vista has preserved Hawaiian cultural heritage in the San Diego region since its founding in 1969, making it one of the longest-running Pacific Islander civic organizations in Southern California. Monthly social gatherings on the third Tuesday feature volunteer-prepared Hawaiian dishes, ukulele performances, and lei-making workshops, reflecting the same community-stage tradition maintained at On Stage Playhouse. The club's flagship event, the annual Lōkahi Festival, draws attendees for live music, hula performances by local hālau, cultural demonstrations, and authentic island cuisine. Four generations of founding families remain active in the organization, teaching traditional practices from lei construction to oli chanting in a membership structure that welcomes anyone with ties to or interest in Hawaiian culture — with large-format celebrations hosted at venues including Swiss Park & Hall San Diego. Headquartered on East H Street near the Chula Vista Center Mall corridor, the Hui O Hawaii holds IRS 501(c) tax-exempt status under EIN 95-6280021 and maintains grant-making capacity in arts, culture, recreation, and ethnic-awareness programming.
