Palomar Motel at 1160 Walnut Avenue in Chula Vista's western 91911 corridor has served as a short-stay lodging property on the Walnut Avenue residential stretch between Palomar Street and Main Street. The City of Chula Vista acquired the property in October 2023 and selected Wakeland Housing and Development Corporation to convert the site — now officially named Palomar Point — into 27 permanent supportive-housing studios through California's Homekey+ program, a community-investment model aligned with the neighborhood outreach at Heritage Community Center. The conversion plan designates 20 units for individuals experiencing or at risk of homelessness, seven units supported by Veterans Affairs Supportive Housing vouchers, and one on-site manager's unit — all targeting residents earning 30 percent or less of the Area Median Income. The redeveloped complex will include controlled access, camera monitoring, a community room, computer lab, and on-site offices for behavioral health care and case management, situating it within walking distance of the dining options along Palomar Street, including Homestyle Hawaiian. The Department of Veterans Affairs will provide individualized case management, behavioral health care, and wellness education for the seven VASH-supported veteran residents occupying dedicated studio units within the converted structure.
