First Church of Christ, Scientist in Chula Vista is a Christian Science branch church on I Street that traces its origins to 1916, when three local families began reading the Lesson-Sermon together. Formally organized in 1927 as a branch of The Mother Church in Boston, the congregation maintains a Reading Room on Third Avenue that stocks the Christian Science Monitor and denominational study materials alongside the civic resources at the Chula Vista Public Library Civic Center Branch. The current I Street edifice was constructed in 1970 after the congregation sold its original 1928 Del Mar Avenue building, and a separate Sunday School wing was completed shortly thereafter. Wednesday testimony meetings and Sunday worship follow the standardized Christian Science liturgy of scriptural and Science and Health readings, a format that also serves elder congregants connected to senior residences in the 91910 corridor such as Bonita Villa Senior Living.
