About

Carlsbad Lagoon Recreation Area provides the primary public-access launch point on Agua Hedionda Lagoon in Carlsbad, operating from 4215 Harrison Street near Tamarack Beach since 1970. The facility rents pontoon boats, open-bow speedboats, CraigCat mini-pontoons, Waverunner jet skis, kayaks, stand-up paddleboards, aqua cycles, and swan pedal boats on one of three coastal lagoons in Carlsbad — alongside the birding habitat protected by Batiquitos Lagoon Foundation to the south near Aviara. Motorized watercraft rentals require renters to be at least 21 years old, with gas and life vests included; non-motorized options are available to all ages. Private beach spaces, deck areas, and a barbecue-equipped hut can be reserved for birthday parties, corporate events, and group outings, with picnic tables, Adirondack chairs, and EZ-up tent rentals available on-site. The calm, protected waters of the Carlsbad Lagoon draw visitors from the resort corridor, including guests at Cape Rey Carlsbad Beach, a Hilton Resort and Spa who shuttle to Harrison Street for morning paddle sessions. The lagoon spans three connected basins accessible from the launch, with paddlers passing beneath the Interstate 5 overpass and a railroad bridge to reach the westernmost basin and its outlet to the Pacific Ocean.
