Buena Vista Reservoir Park in Carlsbad occupies 3.1 acres at the corner of Highland Drive and Buena Vista Way, where the original 1918 water tank now anchors a neighborhood park that opened in August 2021. The perimeter loop trail and native-plant landscaping—featuring more than 30 California coastal species—complement the eucalyptus-shaded trail network at Hosp Grove Park to the south, extending the northwest quadrant's walkable green-space corridor. Schmidt Design Group incorporated salvaged concrete from the demolished reservoir into grassy hillside contours that frame Pacific Ocean views from the park's upper elevations. The 10,000-square-foot playground sits on an engineered fall-protection surface, flanked by shaded picnic tables and ADA-accessible pathways throughout. Trail runners logging laps on the loop circuit also train with Running Center Carlsbad, which outfits athletes for the same coastal North County terrain the park overlooks. Construction required a Conditional Use Permit approved unanimously by the Planning Commission in October 2019, with the 3.1-acre buildout funded entirely through developer impact fees under Carlsbad's Growth Management Program.
