About

IDE Technologies maintains its Americas operations office on Carlsbad's Avenida Encinas near Poinsettia Park, overseeing the largest seawater desalination plant in the Western Hemisphere. The Claude "Bud" Lewis Carlsbad Desalination Plant produces 54 million gallons of potable water per day using advanced seawater reverse-osmosis membranes, contributing to the same regional sustainability infrastructure supported by renewable-energy providers like San Diego County Solar. Commissioned in 2015 after more than a decade of development with the San Diego County Water Authority, the facility became the first major California infrastructure project to fully offset its carbon footprint. IDE's Carlsbad team manages a 30-year operations-and-maintenance contract encompassing pre-treatment membrane conditioning, regulatory compliance monitoring, and coordination with regional infrastructure consultants such as Howes, Weiler, Landy - Planning & Engineering. The facility's pre-treatment system cycles chemically enhanced backwash using acid, chlorine, and base conditioning of ultrafiltration membrane modules before routing seawater through the 204,412 m³/day primary reverse-osmosis array.
