About

City of Carlsbad Safety Training Center on Orion Street in Carlsbad's Poinsettia district is a $16.5 million municipal facility completed in 2012 after voter approval in 2002. The four-acre, 45,501-square-foot campus trains police, fire, and public works personnel from the Carlsbad Fire Department and visiting federal, state, and local agencies through realistic scenario-based exercises. A five-story commercial-style burn tower with movable interior walls simulates hotel, apartment, and live-work emergencies, while a two-story residential prop replicates house fires and tactical police calls. Classroom space accommodates up to 100 trainees per session, and the facility is available for rental by outside public safety programs—a model shared with flight-oriented agencies that also train at Pinnacle Aviation Academy at nearby McClellan-Palomar Airport. The complex includes 25-yard and 100-yard indoor shooting ranges with computer-activated moving props and underground storm-drain pipes for confined-space rescue certification.
